One would think the resulting poems would be overwhelmingly dark, but that is not the case. Yes, there are brooding moments here. But there are also moments of levity. Timothy Barr has a natural inclination toward the lyrical without being bogged down by rigid structure (with a few notable exceptions, such as some Shakespearean-inspired sonnets).TIME MARKED IN STORMS -These general-themed poems were written in the same period as those from The Train of Longing and have the same lyrical quality.

Though not specifically related to the gay experience, it is easy to see how Barr’s internal storms influenced them. With imagery that is at turns surprising, disturbing, fun and sometimes just plain quirky, there are no hard and fast life lessons here- there is only experience. But even when writing about difficult feelings, there is a joy in Barrs use of language.
